Greetings! Just as the crisp autumn air welcomes us into fall, The Humane Society of Otter Tail County would love to welcome you to stop by and take a peek at the many new ‘residents’ we are receiving daily! With the drop in temperature, we are seeing an increase in the number of new arrivals, looking for a warm place to sleep and a good meal to fill their bellies. So thankfully, we are in no short supply of delightfully charming companions that would be thrilled to warm your feet and your hearts as the days grow shorter and the weather turns cold.
In our busy time please consider making a donation to help us care for the lost, abandoned and abused animals of our county. All donations are tax deductible. That means your old rugs, towels, blankets, become worth something, it also insures that one of our shelter animals has a nice soft place to call home for the night. Other items we frequently run short of are cat litter, dish soap, laundry soap, dryer sheets, canned foods and really anything else you think may help. The most valuable thing you can donate is your time. Just 5 minutes of undivided attention to our animals can make a huge difference in their quality of life. Being kenneled can be a very stressful time for these animals and nothing can be more comforting, than a chin scratching or belly rub.
A Pets Ten Commandments...
1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

The primary mission of the HSOTC is to protect animals from cruelty, ignorance, and harm through public education and advocacy. We need more animal legislation, better enforcement of existing laws, and encouragement of pet adoption through Humane Society Shelters.
Here at the Humane Society of Otter Tail County, we try very hard to ensure that the dogs and cats who come to us find a perfect home. We do a short interview with the prospective new family, and have them fill out an application for adoption. This has them detail the home they will provide for the new pet. Once they are ready to adopt we make sure they have all the information they need to give the animal a good home. We charge an adoption fee and then we require a down payment towards the animals sterilization, which is refunded when the spay/neuter takes place. The first priority on our agenda though, is to find our animals the perfect match.
