Southern Michigan Schipperke Club
News
(Senior dogs seem to be the most common dog turned into Schipperke Rescue these days. Seniors are great for "older" folk who want a "stay by your side" companion, rather than a full of energy, needs a five mile walk every day, kind of dog.)
Who We Are
(Southern Michigan Schipperike Club was formed in 1987 to promote the breed and to educate the public about this unusual dog. Our rescue efforts actually began in 1991 with a dog from the Southfield pound. We average 10-12 dogs per year. All dogs are spayed/neutered before being adopted. All are current on vaccines, are checked for heartworm and put on preventative. They live in a foster home for a minimun of 2 weeks so we can evaluate their personality and correct any behavior problems before they get out of control. We then try to place the dog in the best home possible for that individual dog.)
Adopting a friend
(Adopting an older dog is a great experience. Not that puppies aren't special. The wonder of seeing the world through the eyes of a puppy is something to behold. But for a lot of people, 2 years of raising a puppy through the housetraining, chewing, biting, digging stages is just too much. Those with full time jobs or those raising young children do not have the time or energy to do a credible job. And those who are "older" do not have the energy to run after a puppy all day long. It takes more than yelling "NO" all day to raise a puppy. It takes time to teach them what you consider "right" and rewarding them for doing the good stuff.
Older dogs are usually very housetrained. They are willing to sit on the couch and watch TV, go for walks without pulling, go for car rides, etc. and can do this the minute they walk into your lives. They have "been there, done that" and are usually not bothered by the crazy things that happen in most lives. In general, with the right match, an older dog is the perfect companion. They have so much to give it is incredible. Please consider an older dog as your next best friend. Please read more about adopting older dogs at Good Dogz - www.gooddogz.org/choosing/olderdog.htm)
