Who We Are
(ANIMAL SERVICE LEAGUE is an organized group of volunteer members dedicated to issues of animal welfare and based in Cass County, Michigan. The purpose of the organization is to help improve the quality of life of all animals in need in the Michiana area and to promote the education of its citizens with reference to the animals’ humane care and treatment.
Our prime concern addresses the problem of pet overpopulation. Our efforts focus on educating the public about this vital issue and offering financial assistance to pet owners, such as the elderly and those on fixed low incomes, to help them get their pets properly vaccinated, spayed and neutered.
We have set up educational programs in our local schools, because we feel that educating the children in proper pet care and treatment is a first step toward engendering their respect of and compassion for animals as sentient creatures entitled to love, kindness, food, water and essential medical care.
ANIMAL SERVICE LEAGUE volunteers offer their homes and time to foster pets "in transit" to new homes. We have no central facility. We advertise in the People’s Peddler, on the Web on PetFinder.com and on our own website at www.animalserviceleague.org.
Our goals are never ending in attempting to provide the very best "forever" homes for our foster animals. In that effort, we require adoption applications to be completed for each proposed adoption, and one of our volunteers makes a personal in-home interview visit with the prospective adoptive family before the adoption is approved. Follow-up calls are made during the first 60 days after placement.
We are registered 501c3 with the IRS and funded entirely by public contributions. We must rely solely on the generosity of public support to continue our work.
Although the extent of our accomplishments is limited by our bank balance, we will strive to continue our efforts on behalf of the animals…speaking out for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Adopting a friend
(All ASL pets, including puppies, are spayed and neutered prior to adoption. All animals are UTD on vaccinations, are microchipped, and are tested for heartworm and/or put on heartworm preventive. Our adoption fees for dogs and puppies range from $145 to $195, depending on the age of the pet and whether it is mixed breeding or purebred; 25% discount for Senior adopters over 65 and for the second pet adopted by the same applicant. Fees for cats range from $75 to $125 with the same senior and multi- discounts as with dogs. We offer a special allowance to our local Cass County adopters. Our adoption contract allows for a "two-week trial period" during which, if it is determined that the pet will not work out after all, it may be returned for a full refund of fee. After the trial period, we still require the return of the pet should it have to be given up at a future point in time; however, there is no refund of fee then.)You can fill out an application to adopt one of our pets by clicking here.
Come Visit Us!
(Because we are a foster organization, we do not have "hours" but set up appointments to show the pets. Contact can be made to request a showing by calling Lois at 269/782-6352 or e-mailing catsrforever@verizon.net. Dowagiac, Michigan, is located in the SW corner of Michigan, approximately 45 minutes SW of Kalamazoo or 30 minutes NE of South Bend, Indiana. For "long-distance" adoptions, we require the submission of photos or a short video of your home so that we may "see" where the pet will live. Locally, we do in-home, pre-adoption inspection visits prior to placement, and a follow-up visit after placement.)
