WHO WE ARE

Second Chances is a no-kill rescue and the animals taken in are here until they are adopted into an approved forever home. Debbie (that's me) is the founder of Second Chances which focuses on pit bull terriers and was started in July, 2000.

The homeless dogs and puppies are from shelters where they urgently need a place to go since they have a time limit for their stay and are bound for either euthanasia or research. Unfortunately, OWNED OR STRAY DOGS CANNOT BE ACCEPTED HERE BECAUSE OF THIS and priority has to be given to the desperate shelter dogs. Cats that are urgent at the shelters sometimes make their way here too but on a very limited basis.

All animals have any medical needs completed and are up to date before being adopted into a loving responsible home. This includes heartworm testing and preventative, spaying/neutering, vaccinations, microchipping and deworming. Cats are Feline Leukemia/FIV tested, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped. Second Chances' expenses are out of pocket which cover some - not all - of the extensive costs of providing medical treatment, food and a safe place for these animals. All fostering is done from my private home.

Pit bull terriers are wonderful dogs but people should do extensive research about these dogs before considering adoption. They require knowledgeable conscientious consideration on the part of the potential adopter. Because these animals are feared and misunderstood, they can be blamed very easily by the uninformed public if there's an "incident," even if it's not their fault so caretakers need to be extra cautious when out in public. A well behaved and trained pit bull that is a good ambassador for the breed is what will change minds of those that feel these dogs should be condemned and "exterminated." Many of these dogs make great therapy dogs, fly ball participants and agility proponents.

It is recommended that pit bulls be placed singly or with a compatible dog of the opposite sex to achieve a level of harmony in the household. The best possible match is my goal to ensure success and a forever home. These dogs are not for everyone and an educated responsible decision should be made before considering a pit bull so it doesn't become one of the many unfortunate statistics that end up at the shelters or on the streets as a stray. Personally, I wouldn't be rescuing these dogs if it wasn't for the many wonderful unique qualities they possess that make them such fantastic companions.

If you have any questions, please contact me via email. If you would like to help out by sponsoring a rescue dog or with items for the dogs, such as dog food, toys, etc, please email to find out what is most needed at the time to provide for the comfort and needs of the homeless animals.

THANK YOU FOR CARING AND ADOPTING FROM A RESCUE!!!

ADOPTING A FRIEND

The adoption procedure for one of these dogs consists of filling out an application, a vet reference, two personal references and a home visit. Homeowners only! A fenced yard will be a must in many cases for the dog's safety.

The adoption fee for dogs ranges from $200 to $225 where $25 of that is sometimes donated to Pit Bull Rescue Central, a wonderful site for educational information and help in placing the bully breed. The adoption fee for cats is $85.

Starfish Story
A man was walking on the beach the morning after a storm. Thousands of starfish had washed up on the shore, and were now starting to dry out and die.
As he walked, he came upon another man who was picking starfish up one at a time and throwing them back into the water.
With a quizical look, he commented to the man throwing starfish, "There are so many of them, you can't save them all, what you are doing is not important."
The second man picked up a starfish, and as he was about to throw it back into the water, said, "That is correct, I can't save them all, but I can save THIS ONE, and to IT (him/her?), it's a very important life to save."
"Furthermore," he added, "If you help me," he continued, "twice as many of these very important lives can be saved."
