News

The Alaskan Malamute. Is this the right dog for you? First, answer these few questions? Can you deal with large amounts of dog hair twice a year (and I mean enough hair to coat 50 medium sized dogs!) Can you live with an animal that is extremely intelligent and one who can pull off the sneakiest of tricks? Can you find humor in coming home to find your couch has been used as a teething ring or a bedspread that has been reduced to fluff strewn all over the house? Can you live with giant holes in your landscaping? If you have (honestly) answered "yes" to these questions, then yes, the Alaskan Malamute may just be the dog for you. They can be a challenge to own, but they also can be the most rewarding animal you may ever own.

Who We Are

Golden Years Alaskan Malamute Rescue specializes in the needs of the older Malamute, however we will never turn away a Malamute because it is too young. We opened our kennels in October of 2000, and it didn't take very long to fill up. We carefully screen our adoption applicants so we can be sure you get a dog that will fit into your household. Often we are asked "Why should I pay an adoption fee? Shouldn't the dog be free?" 90% of the Malamutes that come into rescue are not spayed/neutered. Many are not up to date on shots or have some type of medical conditon that needs to be treated. The vet bills for these animals can easily run into the hundreds of dollars before they are placed. This does not include food, grooming expenses, etc. All of these costs come out of our own pockets, so we are only trying to recover at least a portion of the vet bills. There is NO PROFIT in animal rescue. Our "income" is seeing one of our Mals get his/her very own forever home where everyone is happy. Each Malamute has it's own definite personality and we want them to be happy in their new surroundings.

Adopting a friend

Malamutes are a very unique breed. Their ancestors had to be strong, brave and very intelligent to survive harsh winters and long hours on the trail. They can be a challenge to own, so we recommend that potential adopters do alot of research on the breed prior to adopting one of these magnificient animals. They can chew up everything you own, steal things in the blink of an eye, or do some of the craziest dance moves you've ever seen. These dogs are natural clowns and they love to make people laugh, even at their own expense. A bored Malamute is a destructive Malamute, so they need constant stimulation. Obedience training, back packing, sledding, and more keep these dogs happy and healthy. The older Mals still can get into trouble, but they may prefer to just "watch" the world go by.
