Featured Pup

ROMEO
Romeo is the sweetest dog! He is full of funny expresions and personality. Romeo is a young Belgian Shepherd/Black Lab mix pup who we rescued from a kill shelter in Northern Maine. Romeo is estimated to be 18 months old and is approximately 85 lbs.

Romeo is a little shy when meeting new people, we think he may have been mistreated in the past. But he warms up quickly once he knows he has met a friend, and then turns into a "lap dog." He bonds quickly and deeply.

Romeo enjoys the company of other dogs. He LOVES to play and chase balls. He also enjoys visiting the local dog park and does well in free-range doggie daycare. Read more...

About Us

Dogs Deserve Better is a nonprofit organization dedicated to freeing the chained dog, and bringing our 'best friend' into the home and family.

We are a chained dog and penned dog education, legislation, and rescue 501c3 nonprofit group. We are based in PA, but now have reps all over the country. We are working to change laws and educate society that it's not OK to chain or pen your dog. Dogs long to be part of the family, they are not lawn ornaments, they are living beings deserving of love and respect. Please consider adopting a chained dog today.

Wish List

Saving dogs is a labor of love - for those who dedicate their lives to this cause - it is a calling - even an obsession. As a result, common sense is thrown out the window when a choice needs to be made as to whether to pay the mortgage or pay for heartworm treatment for one dog:) This lack of reason is a common pattern of rescuers losing everything in the name of saving dogs.

This is where you come in. We are always in need of something - and rarely have the funds to support our dog habit. Below is our wish list. If you can help with any of these items - please contact: DDBMaine@yahoo.com

  • Contributions towards vet bills - Many of the dogs we rescue have special medical needs, most have never seen a vet before we rescue them. We pay for spay/neuter, vaccinations and Heartworm testing for all dogs - however, often other unknown medical issues arise that require additional funds to treat.

The cost of basic vetting for one dog is $300 - $400 which our adoption fee does not come close to covering. If you would like to donate towards medical expenses for these pups, please contact Amy at the Brackett Street Veterinary Clinic. Be sure to mention our organization (Dogs Deserve Better). As a private rescue organization, we rely 100% on your generosuty to support our rescue efforts. Without your help, we cannot continue to help dogs in need.
  • Heartworm and Flea/Tick Prevention: We use Frontline, Revolution, Advantix, Interceptor and Heartgard to keep our pups healthly and critter free. We would really appreciate any donations of the above listed products.
  • Antibiotic/Medications: If you have any dog medications lying around in your cabinets, we certainly could use them, especially antibiotics.
  • Cleaning Supplies - Boy do we go through the Paper Towels and Bleach! All Natural (Chemical free) cleaning products are also needed.
  • Crates - We always need medium, large and extra large metal wire crates. Slightly used is not a problem. No plastic or airline crates - as they do not provide sufficient ventilation for crate training purposes.
  • Food - We believe in feeding high-quality, all natural food to our rescued pups to help build their immune systems and to keep them healthy while waiting for their forever homes. We would love donations of food - brands including: Wysong, Wellness, Innova, Solid Gold, Natures Balance, Timberwolf Organics and similar brands.
  • Gift Cards - to Wal-Mart or Pet Supply stores such as Planet Dog, PetCo and Pet Quarters.
  • Leashes - Canvas or Braided Leashes to walk our dogs with. No retractable leashes please.
  • Plastic Storage Containers - we could really use some large (20-30 gallon) storage bins with lids to store our food products in. This keeps the food fresh and nutritious for longer periods of time.
  • Treats! Our dogs love Greenies, all natural dog biscuits, and Raw Hides. Peanut Butter or Cream Cheese to fill our Kong Toys with are also welcomed.

Sponsor a Dog

All of the dogs that come into our rescue have been abandoned or abused. Most have never received proper vet care, food, or toys of any kind. It is so rewarding to give these dogs the lives they deserve because they are always so grateful!

By sponsoring one of our rescue dogs - you will enable us to pay for vaccinations, Heartworm & Lyme disease tests, as well as spay and neutering costs to ensure the good physical health of every dog that we save.

Additionally - every one of our available dogs would treasure toys, a bed, dye-free treats and food (Brands such as Solid Gold, Innova, Wysong, Nutro Natural & Wellness & Greenies).

If you choose to sponsor a dog - you will receive pictures and updates via e-mail - and notification when he is placed in his forever home.

Adopting a friend

If you'd like to adopt one of our dogs, please e-mail DDBMaine@yahoo.com. Or download our adoption form. Return the completed form via email

Our adoption process includes:

  • A completed application
  • A Vet Reference (please provide current and/or past veterinary contact information)
  • A Home Visit
  • A meeting between dog and adoptive family

***All current pets must be up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered before a new dog can be brought into the home. We DO NOT adopt into homes where unaltered pets reside***

Our adoption fee is $200.00. However, if a dog comes from Arkansas or Tennessee there is an additional $100 transport fee unless otherwise noted. We use a USDA licensed transporter to bring our dogs from Southern shelters which costs us $125.00/dog. Your adoption fee goes towards covering the vet costs of each dog. As basic vetting for each dog generally ranges from $300 - $400, the adoption fee does not completely cover this expense.

All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, Heartworm/Lyme tested, on Heartworm and flea/tick prevention and de-wormed several times prior to going to an adoptive home. Additionally our dogs are kept in foster care for at least two-weeks, often longer, for evaluation, prior to adoption.

Volunteer

Dogs Deserve Better would love to have you as a volunteer in your area or via phone, mail, or Internet.

Where do your strengths lie? Do you have a passion for helping these dogs? Do you have a dog in your community living this way, and need to do something about it? Let us know what you'd like to do to help.

Here are some concrete ways to make a difference TODAY:

1. Become an area rep. This requires diligence and a real desire to make a difference. Not for the faint of heart.

2. Get brochures and put them out in your area, vets offices, restaurants, travel plazas.

3. Work to change laws. Very important!

4. Buy (very inexpensive!) and hang our 11x17 posters in your area. They will hold up well in the outdoors, in the rain and snow.
