Who We Are
We are a small group of individuals that united behind the love of Golden Retrievers. We have dedicated a large portion of our lives in rescuing and placing in forever homes the breed we have learned to love. We will take in almost any Golden in need with the exception of Goldens that are people aggressive and known biters. We will not discriminate due to age or health issues. Golden Retrievers from shelters across the country are welcome within our homes and hearts. We strive to match each dog to it’s “perfect” home. A lot of time, effort and thought goes into each adoption with permanent placement as our goal. Happy dogs in happy homes are our reward.
GOLDEN RETRIEVER FRIENDS
In our efforts to save goldens we found that dogs were being killed by the thousands in the south. It was very sad to us and we vowed to help. In the last years we have worked very closely with several Louisiana Rescues, Chihuahua and Pound Puppy Rescue, Humane Society of W. Louisiana, Gulf Coast Dachshund Rescue to name a few. Dogs and puppies come from the efforts of these groups and their wonderful dedicated foster homes that take care of these babies for so long before coming to the north. The majority of dogs and puppies in the south will be euthanized within days of being dropped off at a shelter. We "pull" them and get them into quarantine with a private foster family until they are fully vetted and the incubation period for common dog/puppy diseases has passed. Once this is completed they head north to new foster homes & furever homes!
Adopting a friend
Let us help you in finding the right dog for you and your family
We will place no dog that has shown aggressive behavior. If you see any dog in our list that might interest you, we invite you to email us and we will send you an application to adopt.
Our adoption process involves an adoption fee, an application, vet reference, interview/home visit and an adoption contract which must be signed.
This includes:
Adoption fee- this donation to the rescue funds the care of the dog you are adopting, as well as other dogs in our rescue. The fee varies from $400 and up depending on the age, breed and medical condition of the dog. We have our own private transport from our foster homes so that our dogs are not exposed to any other dogs we know nothing about.
1) spay or neuter if the dog/puppy is of appropriate age and size to ensure that the surgical procedure is safe
2) DHLPP with Corona (1st vaccine, 2nd booster & third booster…if old enough to have one)
DHLPP stands for:
D- distemper
H- hepatitis
L- leptospirosis
P- parvo
P- parainfluenza
3) rabies vaccine IF puppy is old enough (12 weeks)
4) Bordetella (kennel cough)
5) worming- 3 consecutive days once per week during fostered quarantine. A fecal exam will be performed by a vet.
6) Capstar (rids puppy of any fleas within an hour)
7) Frontline Plus- flea/tick prevention
8) Heartworm Test & Ivermectin- heartworm prevention
9) vet records
10) health certificate to cross state lines- equivalent to a physical exam
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT
All our puppies have had a minimum of 2 sets of DHLPP with Corona. This should protect them (there is never a 100% guarantee) from Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvo, Parainfluenza and Coronavirus, but they need one to two more boosters within the next 4 weeks. They will also need a vaccination against Lyme disease if you and your vet choose to vaccinate against this disease. They have had a Bordetella vaccine to protect from Kennel Cough, but this does not prevent all strains of kennel cough any more than our flu vaccine protects against every strain of the flu.
Please understand that puppies can often be very stressed from their transport and their change in living conditions, which can compromise their immune system and between the stress and the compromised immune system, it is very common for them to get Coccidia. This is an internal parasite that can only be treated, never cured (ALL dogs in the world have this, but it lies dormant until stress triggers the parasite to multiply- easily treated).
Another factor for puppies coming from the south to the north is climate change, again the stress from their transport and their change in living conditions, which can compromise their immune system, can lead to an Upper Respiratory Infection- again easily treated, but needs to be treated as soon as you notice a cough, sneeze, yucky eyes or a runny nose.
We will require that you take your new dog or puppy to your vet within the first few business day for a well check.
New England Connection
Our rescued dogs are all housed in private foster homes throughout New England where we learn about the dogs personality, likes and dislikes. This makes choosing the new home more of a personal connection.
Could You Help
GRRLL needs volunteers to help with home visits and fostering. Every month we save dozens of wonderful dogs from shelters and re-home them with loving New England families. Please consider joining us in this effort, we would love to have you! You might be tired and frustrated but always fulfilled when you see and hear all the happy stories of dogs which you have helped save and placed in forever happy homes.
