Our Pet ListWho We AreThe Friends of Montgomery County Animals, Inc. is a nonprofit, tax-exempt humane organization established in 1974. The main purpose of Friends is to provide financial support for humane animal protection projects, emergencies and organizations. Humane groups traditionally operate on a shoestring. Friends in unique because it fills a void in the humane movement by providing monetary help to humane groups and for humane emergency situations.Over the years, Friends has provided natural disaster emergency relief for: Mt. St. Helen's Rescue effort to save animals caught in the volcanic eruption; The San Francisco S.P.C.A. to help earthquake relief efforts; Dade County Animal Relief and West Palm Beach Dog Fanciers to provide medical and placement service for animal victims of Hurricane Andrew; Jefferson County Animal shelter and St. Charles Humane Society (both in Missouri) to aid flood victims in the Mid-West; and annually to EARS (Emergency Animal Rescue Service, United Animals Nation) to help animals in natural or man-made disaster anywhere and at any time! Friends does not operate a shelter or have an office. A small cadre of dedicated humane volunteers carries out the fundraising activities. No one is paid. The Friends of Montgomery County Animals, Inc. is interested in all facets of the animal humane movement. We are particularly concerned with the humane education, spaying and neutering to reduce animal over population, cruelty cases, adoption or given up pets, the care of injured wildlife, and human-animal relationship, e.g. The Hearing Dog Program. Our efforts have been concentrated in the Washington Metropolitan area, but we also have support nationwide projects.
Hurricanes Katrina and RitaFMCA's Response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita's 4-Footed Victims is At Least $4,000!Dorothy Shapiro, a long-time member and generous supporter of FMCA, has pledged $2,000 to FMCA's hurricane relief effort with the agreement that the Board, membership, and volunteers will match her gift. The FMCA Board pledges $1,000 and the FMCA adoption group has already raised $300+ and will continue their drive at October open houses. I am asking FMCA members to send their checks today (be it $10 or $100) to raise the additional $700 needed to match the $2,000 pledge. FMCA has always responded to animals in need in natural disasters. We research which local groups will benefit the most from the FMCA donation(s). Winnie Reed and Leigh Hughes have concluded that the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and the Houston SPCA are worthy recipients. Not only has LSUSVM taken in hundreds of cats and dogs, but they are operating as a "foster care program" for displaced people and their pets who have reconnected. In addition, LSU and the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center near Gonzalas, Louisiana, have set up a central staging area for horses retrieved from New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Currently, the Expo Center houses 90 horses and mules, 19 of which are carriage horses and mules rescued from downtown New Orleans. LSU estimates that 300 more horses need to be retrieved. The Houston SPCA has been proactive even before the hurricane devastated the Gulf Coast. They took all the animals in the New Orleans shelter before Hurricane Katrina struck. SEND YOUR CHECK TODAY, made payable to FMCA, and write Hurricane Relief in the memo space. Adopting a FriendAfter you decide which animal you wish to make a member of your family, you will be required to complete an adoption application form, which will be reviewed by a volunteer who will interview you. If all is in order, you will sign an adoption contract where you promise to meet certain criteria for care of the animal. You will also receive a copy of the medical form which contains information such as tests, vaccines, etc. that have already been done for the cat.
