Special Pet Profile - Our Pet of the month for January is Lakoda...

Our Goal:

  • Together, Animal Control, Save A Pet Society, Inc. (SAPS) and Volunteers strive to make the animals in our care:

  • Comfortable

  • Well fed

  • Provide excellent veterinary care

  • Treat illness or injury

  • Seek out new homes for unclaimed animals through our adoption program

Who we are

  • The Seekonk Shelter is a municipal shelter staffed by the Animal Control Department

  • We do not take "owner-turn-ins" - However we do accept back an adopted animal from us in certain situations. Please call and speak to an officer if you are having a problem with your adopted animal. We may be able to help you remedy the situation or refer you to the appropriate professional that will know what is best to handle your particular situation.

  • We have animals that we have determined to be candidates for adoption

  • We have an application process, so no one leaves "the same day" with a new pet, but with a non-refundable deposit we will hold an appropriate animal of your choosing while we process your application – See Below for details

  • We try whenever possible not to put adoptable animals to sleep

  • We cannot call ourselves a "No Kill" shelter because we have a limited amount of space. Cages must always be available when needed for the next homeless animal.

  • What we do:

    • Enforcement of Town Control By-Laws and Licensing Regulations

    • Community education and referrals for pet owners

    • Animal Control Officers can assist you with information on dog licenses if the Town Clerk is not available.

    • We are annually appointed as Inspectors of Animals for the Department of Agriculture – which involves Quarantines, Annual barn inspections, Rabies specimen preparation/transportation for testing at the state laboratory and we coordinate with the Department of Health on follow up of dog bites

    • Please note – we no longer have Friends of Animals Certificates available at the shelter, please visit http://friendsofanimals.org/index.html

Our Shelter Adoption Program: (See Application form at bottom of page)

    • Both cats and dogs are vaccinated against Distemper and Rabies

    • Each cat or dog over the age of 5 months is spayed/neutered before it leaves the shelter to go to their new home

    • Dogs are given Bordetella vaccinations and are tested for Heartworm & treated if positive

    • Cats are tested for Leukemia and Feline Aids

    • Dogs and cats can be micro chipped as well for a fee

    • Adoption Fees will reflect veterinary costs charged to us - which is a discounted rate

    • We assume a large portion of the expense of the spay/neuter surgery for the cats and dogs

    • A neuter/spay deposit is required when an animal is adopted from the shelter before it is spayed or neutered. (Instructions on deposit reimbursement are listed on your final adoption paperwork)

    • We require written landlord permission if you rent your home and proof of ownership if you own your home. (tax bill/mortgage statement)

We can do a shelter adoption for your found/stray cat as long as it has not been reported as lost. For $75.00 we will have the cat spayed or neutered, tested for FeLV/FIV, vaccinated against Rabies and Distemper. For an additional $20.00 we can microchip the cat so he/she is permanently identifiable to you as the owner. Micro chipped animals have a better chance of being reunited with their owners should they become lost. Call us and we'll get you started on the paperwork that is necessary to have your found pet healthy and protected.

Feral Release Program for wild or semi-wild cats

Our Feral Program is designed to assist residents who will continue being caregivers to outdoor cats in their care. We will FeLV/FIV test, spay/neuter, vaccinate for Distemper & Rabies, microchip for identification, and release back the wild cat you have been feeding and letting live in your barn or shed, etc. Donations are appreciated to help continue this service to our community and help as many cats as possible. We realize that feral (wild) cats will not be adoptable if they are caught and brought into the shelter, and we hate to see them destroyed if they can be saved. If we make it impossible for them to have unwanted-wild kittens and protect them from Rabies everyone is safe and no one loses! If you are from Seekonk, call us please.

    What is Save A Pet?

Save a Pet is a volunteer non-profit organization affiliated with the Seekonk Animal Shelter to fund programs and help find homes for available dogs and cats.

    Our Goal:

To actively seek out new homes willing to make a lifetime commitment to a new pet. To make everyday a day that a dog gets out for a walk with a friendly volunteer and a cat has a safe place to purr. We are always seeking energetic people who love animals and who want to make a difference in the lives of the animals at our shelter. To keep the animals at the shelter healthy, well fed and comfortable while waiting for adoption by providing excellent veterinary care this is diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive in nature.
