Who We Are:
The Martha's Vineyard branch of the MSPCA was founded in 1955, by Island humanitarian Katherine Foote, and sits just off of the Vineyard Haven Road, on the outskirts of the old whaling town of Edgartown. The small residence Ms. Foote once lived in, has grown to become a full-scale humane society. It provides all of the services and programs of large city shelters, but on a much smaller scale. The new shelter building, completed in 1991, is the Island's safe haven for our lost, stray, surrendered and abandoned animals. Services we provide include spay/neuter programs, adoption and grief counseling, euthanasia, and cremation. We have a strong volunteer program, and highly encourage anyone who has an interest ( a minimum age of sixteen is necessary), to help with animal caregiving, administrative duties and special events. The MSPCA is a 501(c)(3) organization, which receives no federal or state funding, and depends greatly on the generous support of the community, to help continue the work we do.
Adopting a friend:
If you come to visit us, please don't expect to take home a pet on your first visit. Prospective adopters are encouraged to fill out applications, get to know the animal, and learn about his or her previous family, medical and behavioral history. Take the time to think things over, go home and discuss the idea with other family members, and speak with an adoption counselor, who will help you determine whether this is a good match. We have many years of experience and lots of resources to help you make the best decision. All of our animals are spayed and neutered before going into a new home. They're vaccinated and wormed. Dogs are heartworm tested and cats are Felv/FIV tested.Once you've determined that you're ready to adopt, we encourage you to take your new friend on a home visit, to see how he or she adjusts to your household. There may be other pets, young children, or elderly family members to consider. If the visit is a success, you're ready to finalize the adoption. You'll sign an adoption contract, receive medical records, and leave us a donation, so that we may continue to help new arrivals taking the place of your adopted pet! After that, we hope to stay in touch with you, to ensure that everyone is adjusting, and we remain available to answer any questions that may arise. We enjoy hearing from adopters and receiving pictures of alumni to hang on our "Happy Endings" board!
