Who We Are

We are a small not-for-profit Great Dane rescue group, although we have rescued other breeds and some cats. We receive no type of goverment or public funding. While we do accept private donations, the bulk of all expenses are paid from our pockets. The adoption fee mentioned in animal description in no way pays all of the expenses for that animal. The money received from these fees enables us to continue to help other animals.

A Prayer For Animals

Hear our humble prayer, O God,
for our friends the animals,
especially for animals who are suffering;
for any that are hunted or lost or deserted
or frightened or hungry;
for all that must be put to death.
We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them
we ask a heart of compassion
and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals
and so to share the blessings of the merciful.

-Albert Schweitzer

Love is patient, love is kind...
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV

"ADOPTING A FRIEND"

Please Read About Our Adoption Process before contacting us!
To protect all of our rescues our adoption process is very strict.

At this present time all possible adopters "MUST" live in a 100 mile radius of West Monroe, Louisiana.

1. The very first step is for you to call or e-mail me and request an adoption application. Make sure you leave a clear message, stating your name & phone number on our answering machine. Please keep in mind that providing false information will result in nullification of this application. I will mail the adoption application to you promptly, so fill it out to the best of your ability and mail it back to me. This is a lengthy and detailed process. Serious inquires only! Having a Great Dane is a "HUGE RESPONSIBILITY" and should be researched before getting this breed. This process helps us weed out bad applicants, while it helps to match possible adopters with Danes or animals that will fit best into their routine and homes.

2. Once your application is reviewed, if it is approved, you must have 5 unrelated references and at least 2 veterinarian references as well. Your veterinarian are called...they must be concrete references. Complete background check is done.

3. If your references are approved, I or a representative of H.A.R. will go to your home to conduct a home inspection.

4. If you are approved at all stages of the adoption process, you will be considered to adopt the Dane or animal you are interested in. If you are chosen, your family and other pets can come meet the Dane or animal you are interested in.

5. All Danes and animals are placed on strict adoption contracts which must be signed prior to adoption. Each rescue is kept up with for life and we constantly check to be sure the adoption contract is always followed.

6. Adoption fee must be paid in full prior to adoption.

A Eulogy to a Dog

We all know that dogs have special qualities, which make them unique among all creatures on this earth. Their devotion and loyalty to man have set them apart. One of the most enduring eulogies to this affect was presented by a Sedalia, Mo. lawyer by name of George Graham Vest, who was later to become a US Senator. His speech was in response to a lawsuit on behalf of "Old Drum", a foxhound who was viciously killed by a human neighbor. His owner brought suit for damages. Senator Vest concluded his case with the following speech:

Gentlemen of the jury, the best friend a man has in the world many turn against him and become his worst enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it the most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.

Gentleman of the jury, a man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends, desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies and when the last scene of all come, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his grave side will the noble dog be found. His head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."

Old Drum's master won his suit, amidst a courtroom filled with tears, and Senator Vest's statement has been preserved as a classic statement as presented above.

"Magnum's before and after pictures"

Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal.
Sir Thomas Moore

When rescued Magnum was a skeleton weighing 83 pounds. It was devistating to see him in person. Every where you looked all you saw was vertabrae[s], ribs, hips, butt and all other bones thinkable. He had no muscle mass. Pictures don't show how bad he was. People who saw him with their own eyes would cry and ask how is he still breathing?

In this picture above he weighed 132 pounds. Since that picture was taken he is now over 140 pounds.

Update on Magnum
We pulled Magnum off our adoption list sometime back as a result of some complications. His health condition has not be diagnosed yet. We are praying it's not cancer. We are in the process of having a bone marrow test done on him as soon as we get enough money for this test.

PRAYER'S ARE GREATLY NEEDED FOR THIS LOVING GIANT, WHO DESERVES A CHANCE!

Lend Me A Pup”

I will lend to you for a while a puppy, God said,
For you to love him while he lives
and to mourn for him when he is gone.
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,
or maybe for two or three
But will you, till I call him back
take care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you
and (should his stay be brief)
you'll always have his memories
as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise that he will stay,
since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught below
I want this pup to learn.
I've looked the whole world over
in search of teachers true
And from the folk that crowd life's land
I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love
Nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come
to take my pup back again.
I fancied that I heard them say
"Dear Lord Thy Will Be Done,"
For all the joys this pup will bring,
the risk of grief you'll run.
Will you shelter him with tenderness
Will you love him while you may
And for the happiness you'll know
forever grateful stay.
But should I call him back
much sooner than you've planned
Please brave the bitter grief that comes
and try to understand.
If, by your love, you've managed
my wishes to achieve,
In memory of him that you've loved,
cherish every moment with your faithful bundle,
and know he loved you too.

"I've learned.."
By Dana Armstrong

Through all the years while dealing with all their fears
Through all of their tears while hearing all the sneers
Through all the rain and feeling all of their pain
Through all of their sorrows and all of their tomorrows
We will continue to Rescue
‘Till all of their tears and fears are released
‘Till all of their sorrows and tomorrows have been restored
So let the overflowing rivers of Rescue remain
Flowing strong and free
Restoring their spirits and bodies
Like the powerful Summer Sun
Giving a healing warm embrace

"Rainbow Bridge"

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
