Adopting a friend

ADOPTION POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: The Jessamine Humane Society strives to insure successful adoptions through its policies and procedures. Adding a pet to a family is a decision that should be made responsibly and with forethought—we consider this to be a lifetime decision for the animal. Our staff is knowledgeable and available to assist anyone wishing to adopt a pet. We encourage people to visit the Shelter and spend time with any animal they might have an interest in. To help in the decision-making process, a preliminary form is required for anyone wishing to adopt a pet. This gives useful information to the Adoption Committee which reviews the forms as soon as possible after completion. The JHS does not approve applications on a first-come basis; rather, all applications for each pet are reviewed and the best home for the animal is chosen. The decision is made taking all factors into consideration regarding the special needs of each particular pet. We are interested in securing permanent, loving homes for all adoptable pets and take this decision very seriously with each animal’s best interests at heart.

Upon approval of a preliminary form, the adopting person/family is notified and returns to sign an adoption contract and pay the adoption fee which includes: For dogs: Spaying/neutering, initial deworming, the first in a series of shots (DHLPP), rabies vaccination, and AVID micro-chip. A heartworm test can also be performed for an additional cost of $25 at the request of the adopting family. For cats: Spaying/neutering, initial deworming, the first in a series of Shots (FVRCCP), rabies vaccination, and AVID micro-chip. A combo-test for FELUK/FIV will be performed prior to the vet appointment and is included in the adoption fee.

The adoption contract is an agreement to fulfill specified conditions and requirements to insure a happy, healthy pet. This is the family’s promise to provide for the needs of the pet or to return it to the Shelter should circumstances lead to inability to care for the animal’s physical and/or emotional needs.

A vet appointment is then made for the pet. The adopting family is notified of the appointment and may pick-up the pet after surgery and shots. No dog or cat leaves the Shelter without being spayed/neutered and vet checked. Additional vaccinations and preventative care are the responsibility of the adopting family.

Come Visit Us!

From Lexington, Kentucky, take US 27 South to Nicholasville. Turn left at the large intersection (Sutherland auto dealership and Wal-Mart are on the left) and travel straight through town. As you near the end of town, you will notice Kimberly Square on the right (where the Kroger store is). On the left is a street named Longview. Longview runs between the NAPA auto parts store and a gas station. Turn onto Longview. You will come to a tee in the road, bear right and continue on Longview. There will then be a 3-way stop; proceed straight ahead. Longview will take you into the City-County Park. Ballfields will be on either side. When you see the stone marker that says "Welcome," turn right through the chain-link gate. You will pass the Road Dept., and the Shelter is the white building at the end of the road.
