Adopting a Friend
We update our listings at least once a week with new pets! We are looking for people who want to give our special pals a permanent loving home. We are a no-kill shelter and we find homes for 97% of the pets in our care. Only pets with severe medical or behavioral problems are euthanized, and we have no set time limits for how long a pet may stay. Please continue reading below to learn about our adoption process.
Suds of Fun Dog Wash on Tuesday, July 15

Come visit our CATS
Our cats enjoy their days and nights sleeping, playing and eating in our spacious and sunny cat rooms. Most of our cats are not confined to cages. Our free roaming policy not only provides a nice environment for our felines while they wait for their new homes, but it also allows us to get to know them better. We know which ones are the most playful, or very mellow, or will come running at the opportunity to sit on a volunteer's lap. This helps us to make a perfect match for you. And it provides a nice environment for you to come in to get to know our cats, too.
Go to our web site to view a slideshow of our cat rooms.
Summer Fun Videos of Our Shelter Dogs
Take a peek at what our dogs have been up to this summer! We've created several short music videos featuring some of our special friends having fun in the sun. Go to our web site Summer Fun Video page to view our fun videos.
Our Featured Pets
Palmer and Peter
Palmer is a super friendly guy who loves to be with people. He's very bright, always ready for fun, and he's a nice size at 45 lbs. Palmer is a 2 year old Lab/Pit Bull mix and he's been with us for a long time. Go to our web site to see a fun music video of Palmer having fun in the sun. He loves to run and play and he enjoys playing with other active dogs. Read more about Palmer on his Petfinder page.
Peter is a handsome B&W cat with a sweet personality. He gets along with other cats and he enjoys a good game of chase the feather toy. Peter came to us in horrible shape, his face all swollen and scratched up. He has a food allergy and the poor guy was very itchy. We put him on Science Diet ZD formula and look at him now! He'll need to stay on the allergy food but otherwise he's a healthy boy. We'd love to find Peter a home soon-- almost all of our cats roam free in the cat rooms but unfortunately Peter has to be confined most of the time because of his allergy to their normal food. Read more about Peter on his Petfinder page.
Upcoming Satellite Adoption Schedule
We'll be bringing our adoptable dogs to the Petco in Overland Park several times in 2008 and to other locations and events, as well. And you can always come to our shelter to meet our dogs & cats. It's a very nice facility and whether you come to our shelter or a satellite event we'd love to introduce you to our wonderful pets!
Please note that anyone wishing to adopt a pet from one of our satellite adoptions is asked to fill out an application. Pets are not allowed to be taken home that same day and applications will be reviewed on the following business day. We do this to give you time to think about this important decision and to allow us time to review applications for approval. Please visit the Pet Adoptions page of our web site for information about our adoption process. For more information about any of our events or satellites, visit our web site at www.hsgkc.org.

Who We Are
The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City is a private non-profit organization that has been helping animals in our community since 1912. We strive to promote the general welfare of dogs and cats in the greater Kansas City area. We do this by providing education, preventive veterinary care, adoptions, and spay/neuter services to prevent pet overpopulation.
Come Visit Us! In October of 2000, we moved to a new building and location at 5445 Parallel Parkway. It is a wonderful facility on 10 acres, and it provides a more spacious and comfortable environment for our pets while they wait for a new home. Windows and skylights to let in sunshine, cats playing and lounging in rooms filled with cat furniture and toys, cots for the dogs, and indoor/outdoor dog kennels with big play yards are some of the ways we've made life better for our adoptable pets. Our facility has also enabled our organization to expand all of the services we provide, including adoptions, education, and low cost spay/neutering and preventive veterinary care for the public.
Adoption Hours & Fees
Adoption Hours are:
Monday thru Friday: 9am-5pm
Saturday: 9am-4pm
If you have difficulty visiting us during adoption hours please email us to make arrangements.
Our goal is to send you home with a healthy pet and any information and support you may need to help your new pet adjust to his or her new home.
CATS
The adoption fee for cats is $90.00. All of our cats and kittens have been examined by a veterinarian, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for feline leukemia & FIV, microchipped, dewormed, and treated for fleas & ticks. Kittens who are too young to receive all the necessary boosters and/or the first rabies shot may be brought back to us for those vaccines at no extra charge.
You will also receive a cardboard cat carrier, an adoption information packet, toys, a 5 lb bag of Science Diet, and an excellent DVD called Completely Cats.
The Pets Incredible Completely Cats Series DVD is fun and easy and it will walk you through the steps on how to prepare for your cat. Using this system will quickly help your cat learn where he needs to "go" while you learn how to help your furry friend by preventing unwanted behaviors, and so much more! It's fun to watch, easy to understand, and it covers many of the basic behavior questions people have when they adopt a new cat: Preparing Your Home, Litter Box Training, Playtime & Toys, Introductions, Scratching, Kids & Cats, Spraying. This DVD normally sells for $29 but it's free with any cat adoption from our shelter!
Adopt-A-Buddy Program: Adopt TWO CATS and one adoption fee will be half price ($135 total).

All of our dogs & puppies have been examined by a veterinarian, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas & ticks, tested for heartworms (6 mo. and over), and are on monthly heartworm preventative. Puppies who are too young to receive all the necessary puppy boosters and/or the first rabies shot may be brought back to us for those vaccines at no extra charge.

You'll receive an excellent dog training DVD when you adopt a dog from us. The Pets Incredible Dog Training DVD contains lots of helpful info that works for any dog at any age! While our supply lasts we can fit and send your new dog home with either The Gentle Leader Headcollar or the Easy Walk Harness at no extra cost. Some of our dogs are already using these products at satellites or at the shelter when going for walks.

Our Adoption Process
Please visit the Pet Adoptions page of our web site for information about our adoption process. An application is required to adopt a pet and applicants must meet our adoption requirements. You can download a pet adoption application from our web site and then fax or email it back to us.
Please note that many of our dogs do require a fenced yard, though there may some who are appropriate for apartment living or circumstances where a fence may not be required.
If you have questions about our adoption process, please call or email us. Monday thru Friday call our Humane Services Director at (913) 596-1000 ext. 13. Saturday call our main line at (913) 596-1000. Email is checked and replied to Monday thru Friday.
Volunteering and Donations
Volunteers are a very important part of our organization! We offer many ways in which you can volunteer your time-- from coming to the shelter to walk dogs or brush cats, to assisting with special events and satellite adoptions. We really count on volunteers to help us with our fundraising events. And because many of our animals are with us for a long time before finding their new homes, it is very important to have volunteers to come out and spend time with them. You can volunteer as much or as little as you'd like-- we appreciate all that our volunteers do for us!
There is a volunteer orientation held once a month to get you started. For more information, please call (913) 596-1000 ext. 22 or visit the Volunteer pageof our web site.
We accept all kinds of donations. Building and maintaining our shelter is very costly so monetary donations are especially needed right now. Visit the Donations page of our web site for more information and to make online donations. We also accept donations of items for our animals and shelter needs. If you would like to make another type of donation, or have any questions, please call (913) 596-1000 ext. 22 or visit our web site.
