The members of C.P.R. work in cooperation with the local media, county officials and concerned citizens to give displaced pets "A Second Chance At Life" and to improve the welfare of all companion animals through education of the general public.
Each year in the United States, millions of healthy, friendly, adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized because they have developed behavioral problems, or because they are simply unwanted! This number does not include those animals that are abandoned or dumped because they are inconvenient.
In 1986, two area pet care professionals, Trisha Stilley and Alex Schreiner, set out to make a positive change in those statistics by starting "Companion Dogs Unlimited". This was their 7 week canine obedience/care course that was developed specifically to help average dog owners raise and train a healthy, happy obedient companion dog, and foster responsible pet ownership. It was offered to the public twice a year, every spring and fall in the hopes of fostering more responsible pet owners thus lowering the number of owner surrendered dogs.
By April of 1993, Trisha and Alex felt it would be beneficial to address our area's pet welfare concerns
through an additional avenue---a community-wide cooperative effort directed toward giving adoptable companion animals "A Second Chance At Life" before they are disposed of or taken to the pound. Most Southern Illinois facilities do not sponsor an active adoption program. We also would promote and foster responsible pet ownership... thus the start of Companion Pet Rescue.
