    HISTORY

The Effingham Co. Humane Society was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1979. Although still a very small local volunteer organization, we continue to strive to expand our services. Unfortunately, the limited number of volunteers are still unable to staff the office full time. Our regular visiting hours are 2 pm to 6 pm Monday thru Friday. Other times and Saturdays by appointment.

    PHILOSOPHY

The Humane Society encourages the spaying and neutering of companion animals. We discourage the breeding of pets until the demand absorbs the supply. Although the Effingham Co. Humane Society is a “no kill” rescue group, animal control agencies across the U.S.A. euthanize over 5 million cats and dogs each year—that’s one every 6 seconds. Last year in Effingham County alone, Animal Control officers were forced to kill hundreds of pets. The majority of these surplus pets are healthy, good-natured, and adoptable; there simply are not enough homes for all of them.

"PAWS TO RECYCLE" and HELP RAISE FUNDS

An easy way to Help homeless pets and the environment all at the same time is to recycle your aluminum cans. You can take you aluminum food/beverage cans to Davis Recycling and tell them you would like to donate the proceeds to the Humane Society. (They will have you sign by the amount you donate.) Davis Recycling is located across from Effingham High School and is open Monday thru Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm and Saturdays 8:30 am - Noon. Davis Recycling periodically will issue the Humane Society a check for the aluminum donated. Thanks for your continued support!

    PLACEMENT

Since the Humane Society has a “no kill” policy, we can rescue animals only as space is available. Unfortunately there are far more requests than our network of volunteers can accommodate, but we try to help as many as funds and resources allow. Money, time, and all of our humane efforts are unable to accommodate the vast number of surplus pets. The only solution is the spaying and neutering of companion animals. The more donations and volunteers the Humane Society acquires will allow us to help spay/neuter more animals.

    Interested in Adopting a Pet?

If you are interested in adopting, please call us for more info. We generally respond quicker to phone messages than to e-mails. Adoptions are scheduled by appointment at the Village Square Mall in Effingham. Evening and week-end appointments are available. We have a general policy of only adopting out to families within an 8 hour driving distance.

    VOLUNTEER

    SERVICES

The Effingham Co. Humane Society relies upon the kindness of good samaritans to temporarily provide shelter for homeless pets. We also encourage the adoptions of animals housed in the Effingham County Animal Control facility and other area shelters. The Humane Society provides services such as education, lost and found, spay assistance, and referrals.

    INFORMATION

The Humane Society routinely sends an e-mail newsletter to update volunteers and supporters on Humane Society events and activities and other humane information. If you are interested in receiving our newsletter, e-mail humanesociety@effingham.net. Volunteers are also available to make presentations to local groups and organizations.

    DONATIONS

Donations are always needed. All proceeds benefit homeless and neglected pets. The Effingham Co. Humane Society is run by volunteers. We do not receive tax support or national funding, so we depend on donations, bequests, and gifts to operate. Contributions are greatly appreciated and tax-deductible.
