Bart

Adopt me

I have been named Bart as in Black Bart the gentleman robber of the Old West. The name is proving to be a good one for me. I LOVE food! I must confess that I am a counter surfer and if there is food on a table, especially a low one, I will very quietly sneak up so you don’t notice me and help myself. When my foster Mom tells me that I am a bad dog and I shouldn’t do that I try very hard to look sorry but did I tell you I LOVE food?

Other than that I have turned out to be a very good, happy go lucky, kind of guy. I usually have two toys in my mouth at the same time and when my tail wags my whole body wiggles.

I was picked up as a stray and turned over to L.E.A.R.N. by a kill shelter. I am at least 5 years old and have now learned to be a good housedog. My foster brother and I play once in awhile but not very often although we get along very well. As you can see by one of my pictures I like to just sit in the yard and watch the world go by. I even sit to eat my meals!

If you are looking for a dog to play ball with I am not your guy. If I bring it back to you twice it is really something. I would rather lay in the yard and chew on it. I am very laid back and just enjoy lying around chewing on a bone. I love to go places and am very quiet in the car. I do know some commands and have learned how to sit and wait for food and treats. I stay in the crate when my foster Mom goes to work but I have the run of the house when she does errands and at night when I sleep on a dog bed on the bedroom floor. I do seem to have some sort of allergies because I nibble on my feet and lower legs. The doctor gave me an itchy shot and that helped a lot.

My wish for a forever home is one that just wants a companion, a good buddy and someone to go on walks with and give me belly rubs. Those are the best! I am also a good watchdog and when I hear something I will go to investigate what it might be. You must love kisses too. I sure hope there is someone out there just right for me!

Who We Are

L.E.A.R.N.'s Mission is to be: A charitable and educational organization established to assist in the rescue of unwanted Labrador Retrievers by placing them in homes through fostering, adoption and referral. To provide public education regarding Labrador Retrievers and to promote responsible ownership and the humane treatment of all dogs. L.E.A.R.N. has achieved Federal 501c(3) Status as a non-profit tax exempt organization. You can read more about us on our website http://www.labadoption.org

Adopting a friend

To adopt a dog from L.E.A.R.N.: 1) Fill out an application found on our website (http://www.labadoption.org) or by calling 847-289-PETS. 2) Approved applicants will be contacted by a volunteer for an informal home visit. 3) Dogs are matched with potential adopters who fit their needs. A person on the lab match committee will act as a liason between potential adopter and foster home. 4) Potential adopters and foster homes set up a time for the adopter to drive to meet the dog. As there are foster homes throughout northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, it is possible that potential adopters may have to drive a couple of hours to meet a dog. 5) There is a minimum of a 24 hour waiting period before an adopter can bring his/her new family member home.

Come Visit Us!

L.E.A.R.N. is a rescue run completely by volunteers. There is no central building where dogs are kept. Rather, each dog is placed in an approved foster home for a minimum of 2 weeks. During this time, the dog receives his or her shots, is spayed or neutered, and is temperment tested in a home situation. Foster homes are located throughout southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois and potential adopters are required to drive to the foster home to meet the dogs. Because potential adopters need home visits prior to seeing dogs, as well as needing to be within driving distance of the foster homes, L.E.A.R.N. only adopts dogs out to families that are in southern Wisconsin or northern Illinois.
