Our Featured Pet...

Our featured pets at this time are a handsome pair of tabbies, Boots and Winston. These two boys have become best buddies and spend most of their time together, gently grooming each other or having a friendly wrestling match. Boots is very handsome with dark swirly patterns on his sides and beautiful white markings on his face, chest and feet. Winston is almost a mirror image of Boots but without the white. Both boys are a bit shy initially, but warm up once they have become acquainted with their new human friends, and will be very intent on demanding attention and snuggling. Both boys are a little over a year old as of May, 2007.

News

We are expanding! Due to the great demands on a shelter to provide room and a comfortable atmosphere for our homeless kitties, we have added yet another "home" to our facilities. This two-story house is being remodeled as we write, so that many more cats may be rescued. We have torn out old carpeting and replaced it with linoleum; wall-paper has been torn off and we are now ready to replaster and paint. The leaking roof has been repaired. We have much more to do, but already our "Carriage House" shelter is filling up rapidly. If you are skilled at painting, window repair or general carpentry, we could use a helping hand. We are concentrating on fixing up the inside at the moment, but when warm weather arrives, we will need help with yard work and maintenance. It's rewarding to see an old, neglected building become beautiful again, and our cageless atmosphere is perfect for our feline friends! Our "Studio" location, a small cottage-style house, is also in need of updating! Many of the kitties who live in this building have become long-term residents and we feel that their limited environment needs a face-lift to keep their spirits up! Suggestions for interactive toys, donations of toys, design ideas for creating a more stimulating life-style for these kitties would be most welcome! The kitties at "the Studio" have their own "apartments" (high-rise cages with perches), and we do our best to keep a rotation system so that some kitties are always out playing in the room. Our summer project has been completed and with great results! Many thanks to the Miccio Foundation for their support in helping us to totally insulate, panel and add new windows to our feral cat building. Although the building is small, it feels like a mansion to our shy kitties. The building is set up with individual apartments inside and pet door access to enclosures outside where the kitties can watch the birds and other outdoor actiivities. We were also able to make improvements to the kitchen area of our "studio" location. Our old rusting, metal sink was removed and replaced with cupboards, countertop and stainless steel sink. What an improvement! Our broken water heater is also gone and we now have a small and efficient water heater with on/off switch to keep costs down! A new back door has been installed which will help keep out cold drafts this winter and will make our kitties and doggies more secure all year round! FUND-RAISERS! Our fund-raisers this past year, while helpful, did not raise enough money for ever-rising heat and electrical bills, not to mention vet bills and costs for food and litter. We have also had many special needs kitties this past year, so vet bills have been quite overwhelming. We are looking for more ideas for fund-raisers, so if you can send us an email with ideas, we would be most grateful! We would also welcome any organizations who would like to raise money for a worthy cause....your contributions would be so appreciated and would help our special friends at the TLC Animal Shelter. We are a total volunteer shelter...there are no salaries to pay....any money we receive goes directly to the animals and their care. We do have two on-going projects which not only help the animals, but also the environment! Both projects involve recycling....we make regular trips to the recycling center to turn in redeemable cans and bottles. We also take used ink cartridges from your printer or copier and recycle them for cash for the shelter. This has become a very helpful project and generates a bit of cash to pay off vet bills or buy food and litter. Cartridges can be dropped off at the shelter in Fonda anytime, then we contact the appropriate center that recycles the particular brand of cartridge and send it UPS. The recycling center pays the postage so it's a win-win situation! Please help out the animals and the environment with your used ink cartridges! Our annual fall craft show in Fonda is scheduled for November 2008. It is a big event drawing thousands of people to small-town Iowa. We will have our booth set up once again and will offer some wonderful items for sale or "adoption". For adoption will be our "one-of-a-kind" hand puppets, each with his own certificate of adoption! We also have homemade corsages and floral accent decorations made by a faithful shelter volunteer. Our regular and popular item will be Petbeds by Lois. This lady does an outstanding job of designing pet beds of all sizes and colors and now coordinates them with blankets and toys to match! So, come check out our booth at the annual craft show in Fonda! The town of Fonda had its city-wide garage sale on Sept 1, 2008. The shelter had a special site set up, and found ourselves very busy. This has become an annual event, so come join us if you can. Of course, donations are always welcome.

Who We Are

Hi! My name is Morris, Jr. and I'm the spokes-kitty for the TLC Feline Center at Fonda. I really like my job because then I can help my kitty friends find nice people like you to adopt them. Let me tell you a little bit about the TLC Feline Shelter. I live at the shelter where my human friend, Marilyn Schmitt, takes care of me and about 50 other feline friends. The Shelter here is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, dependant solely on private contributions. I do try to help out with purring, but monetary donations help, too! We are located in a small, rural community, Fonda, in Pocahontas County. What I really like about our shelter is that my friends and I are not confined to cages all day long. Marilyn sees to it that we have several hours a day where we may freely roam and socialize with the other resident kitties. We have lots of toys to play with and carpeted perches in front of huge windows that give us hours of entertainment. We listen to classical music all day long and a few of us educated kitties even watch Iowa Public TV! (Personally, I take my cat nap while listening to the music.) We hope you come visit our shelter--we'd love to meet you! Just give us a call in the evening to set up a special time to visit us. Our number is 712-288-6218.

Adopting a friend

We love our feline friends and want to see that they have a loving, caring home for life! Because of this we take a lot of time visiting with a potential adopter to be sure that we make the very best match. We know our kitties and their personalities and want to make sure that both cat and human are compatible. We may opt for a home visit before and after an adoption to help us in making the very best match possible. We try our best, but there are times when a match just was not meant to be! Therefore, we stay in close contact with our adopters to monitor the progress adjusting in a new home. We are always ready to advise should there be concerns and will take our kitty friend back to the shelter if an adoption doesn't work out.
