Pet overpopulation has reached epidemic proportions throughout the United States. About 8-12 million animals end up in shelters around the country each year, and between 4-6 million of them are euthanized because there are not enough homes for them all.
Lowndes County is no exception. In 2002, almost 6,000 animals were euthanized at the Lowndes County Animal Shelter. These numbers are staggering, and sadly, they continue to rise due to irresponsible breeding and lack of concern.
The HSVLC is a large group of caring volunteers whose main objective is to improve the lives of animals in Lowndes County and surrounding areas. Our slogan, �We Speak For Those Who Cannot Speak For Themselves,� expresses our desire to be a voice for the animals in our community through education, outreach, and advocacy.
Please be aware that the Humane Society and Lowndes County Animal Shelter are two separate organizations with different adoption policies and fees.
The HSVLC was founded in 1989 by nine concerned individuals who saw a need for an animal welfare organization in our community. The main objectives of the society were to improve the lives of animals and put an end to pet overpopulation.
Are you tired of Rover marking his territory on your sofa? OR, how embarrassing is it when you have guests over for dinner and Rover decides to get romantic with one of their legs? Is Fluffy driving you crazy yowling and rubbing against you when she is in heat? AND, what about all those unwanted puppies and kittens? Well, there is a simple solution to all of these problems. Have your pet spayed or neutered. It�s good for you, but it�s also good for your pet. Spaying and neutering helps pets live longer, healthier lives.
The Humane Society now has a Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program that was started to make spaying/neutering affordable for all pet owners. Several Vets in Valdosta participate in this program. For more information, please call 229-242-SPAY (7729), and leave a message. A volunteer will usually return your call within 48 hours.
We need volunteers! Without the support of our members, the Humane Society would not be alive today. We hope you will consider putting your ideas and talents to good use by becoming a part of our worthwhile organization. We need YOU!
Our membership fee is only $10 per year. To become a member, please call our voice mail system at 229-247-3266. Wait for the beep and leave your message, explaining that you are interested in joining or volunteering. One of our volunteers will call you back and get your mailing address. A membership package will be mailed to you that will contain a membership card. Just fill out the card and mail it, along with your membership fee, to: P.O. Box 5323, Valdosta, Ga. 31603.

Keep in mind the life-long commitment you are about to enter into and the personal and financial aspects involved with adding a four-legged family member. All potential adopters must go through a screening process. This process is absolutely necessary to ensure that our pets go to the best homes possible, where both the pet and their new owner are happy with the relationship. It is our goal to place the right pet with the right owner. We make a lifelong commitment to these animals, and we want adopters to do the same.
http://disaster.petfinder.com Petfinder.com has unveiled a comprehensive animal emergency response system helping companion animal victims and their caretakers during disasters. This is a collaborative database linking information from the public and emergency response organizations and making it available to rescuers, victims, and volunteers. The database features the following: *displaced hurricane victims post the locations of their pets so that rescuers can go in and save them *rescuers post the descriptions and photos of pets they find making them available for distraught pet parents to find them *volunteers post their offers of foster care which displaced hurricane victims can search to find temporary care for their pets This is a collaborative effort powered by Maddie's Fund and a coalition of organizations who are all working together to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
