Who We Are

The Atlanta Humane Society is a private nonprofit organization acting as a regional center for the needs of animals, pet owners, and the Community at large concerning animal welfare issues and problems. We are a haven for the unwanted and abandoned with no time limit on hope--a haven with a heart. The Atlanta Humane Society is much more than a shelter--it is a place filled with unconditional love.

Adopting a friend

Adoption Procedures
The basic requirements for adoption from the Atlanta Humane Society are as follows: you must be at least 18 years of age with positive proof of current residence (on a picture I.D.) If you rent (house or apartment), and do not have proper documentation, we must be able to speak with the property owner or rental agent during the adoption process for approval and/or to confirm pet deposit where applicable.You will be asked to complete a preliminary questionnaire prior to adoption. Please do not try to adopt in a hurry. Adoptions are cut off every day a few minutes prior to closing and possibly earlier if volume is high, so keep this in mind. The Atlanta Humane Society reserves the right to refuse adoptions.

In all cases the adoption fee includes:

  • the initial vaccinations and worming (applicable to dogs, cats, puppies and kittens) which will have been done in our processing;
  • a free office visit at one of our participating veterinary clinics in the area;
  • an identifying microchip (applicable to dogs, cats, puppies and kittens) with free, lifetime registration for your pet;
  • arrangements for the surgical sterilization (applicable to dogs, cats, puppies and kittens) of your adopted pet.

There are additional vaccinations required that will be at your expense. If you have used your free office visit and the attending veterinarian diagnoses your pet with a serious health problem, you may return your adopted pet to the Shelter for an exchange or refund. However, if you do elect to keep and treat the pet, you will be responsible for the payment of all costs incurred. The AHS cannot reimburse you for any medical bills you incur. If you have any questions, please ask them during the adoption process.

Mobile adoptions
Mobile adoptions are made possible by the Marianna's Pet HomeFinder program. We hold offsite adoptions at various locations from our Mobile Adoption Vehicles. Check out our Calendar for upcoming dates, times, and locations.
