Who We Are
At Satchel's Last Resort, we try to provide help for dogs, cats and people who have nowhere else to turn. We’ve been doing this for over 10 years; the last three as a registered 501 (c) (3).
Our activities include, but are not limited to:
Taking in so called "un-adoptable" breeds from area shelters.
Taking in cats and dogs whose owners have abandoned them on the road.
Taking in animals from terminally ill people who can no longer care for them. We do our best to arrange for the animal to visit his or her owner as often as possible for the remainder of the person's life.
Providing temporary care for the companion animals of people who find themselves in situations where they cannot properly care for their pet -- whether it's surgery that will incapacitate them for a few months, a domestic violence threat or a living situation that is in flux. These people don't want to surrender their pets forever; they just need a few months of relief.
Fostering animals for the Manatee and Sarasota Counties' Court system (abuse cases).
Working with all our rescued dogs to rebuild their trust in humans to the point where they can be trained for therapy work. Once the dogs are certified, we take them to hospitals, nursing homes and schools for special needs children. Most of our therapy dogs are available for adoption. Animals in our care not suitable for adoption live out their lives with us.
Our future plans include having veterinary and rehabilitation facilities on site. We also hope to be able to provide temporary or long term sanctuary for area shelter and animal control cats and dogs.

Adopting a friend
We don't charge an adoption fee for our dogs. All we ask is that you come and meet the dog you are interested in - see some of our other available dogs, if you wish - and then go home and think about it before making your decision. If you live far away from Sarasota, we can sometimes make an exception to the rule and just let you live the premises for a short while to think over your decision. If you do decide to adopt a dog, we let you take him/her home for a "trial stay". If everybody is happy, you will come back and fill out the adoption papers (at which time you will receive the dog's vet records). If for one reason or another you don't feel it was the perfect match, you bring the dog back us. We just want what is best for you and for our dogs.
