About us

An average of 120 dogs and cats can be housed at the shelter. Sadly, some of these animals have to be euthanized. Every animal admitted to the shelter receives medical care, a warm safe environment in which to heal and learn to trust, and much love to aid in preparation for becoming adoptable. The programs are made possible by the county and caring people who provide funding which keeps the doors open.

Stray animals should be reported and found animals should be dropped off at the shelter. Some anxious owner might be waiting to be reunited with his pet. Drop off cages for dogs and cages for cats are available at the entrance of the Shelter for after-hours use. If you lost an animal, please contact the Shelter immediately to fill out a lost and found report. To report vicious, nuisance or abused domestic animals please contact the Animal Control at 926-0902.

Adopting a friend

The Wakulla Animal Shelter and CHAT requests adoptive families to complete a questionnaire that inquires about your living conditions, whether you rent or own a home, how many other pets you have, who is your vet, etc. We also want to know whether you object to a visit from us at your home. Dogs over 75 lbs must have a fenced in yard. Chaining your dog is out of the question. Prospective owners must be 18 years old. They must understand the local leash law (Ordinance No. 95-29). Shelter animals have an unknown medical history and you must agree to a check-up by a Veterinarian within five working days. Adoption fees are $75 and cover rabies shots and spay/neuter costs. Animals up for adoption must be at least 8 weeks old. Puppies and kittens will receive their first shot and a worming at the shelter before leaving the facility. >

The Wakulla Animal Shelter will chip your dog or cat (Avid Chip) for identification purposes in case your animal ever gets lost. The price for chipping is $20 for non-members and $10 for CHAT members.

The Citizens for Humane Animal Treatment of Wakulla, Inc., known as CHAT of Wakulla are a not-for-profit, charitable corporation. We are a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our Articles of Incorporation were filed on August 8, 2001. We are committed to improving the health, safety, and well-being of domesticated animals in our community. Our roots are in the former Wakulla Humane Society, an organization that had been active for over 30 years. Our activities include: shelter volunteer work, fostering dogs and cats, fund-raising, animal rehabilitation, spay/neuter campaigns and education activities.

Wakulla is one of the fasted growing counties in Florida . Growth brings problems of lost, stray, nuisance, or vicious animals, as well as pet overpopulation. Whether you enjoy fund raising, animal rehabilitation, spending time with lonely dogs and cats, or simply want to make a monetary contribution, your help is greatly appreciated.
