Alarmed at an increasing number of abandoned and homeless dogs and cats, a small group of area residents created the Valley Shore Animal Welfare League in 1972. The League, a non-profit, 501c organization, owns and operates a no-kill shelter for a limited number of placeable dogs and cats. Continuing its initial priorities, the League will pay a portion of the cost of spaying or neutering to those in our community in need of financial assistance.
The League is funded solely by membership dues, fund raising activities, contributions and memorial bequests. A newsletter is mailed periodically to members and friends.

We use Patented Kuranda Dog Beds because they are durable, chew proof and easy to clean. If you would like to donate a bed to us, click here. |
Please come visit our dogs, cats, and other critters and fill out our adoption application, or request an application be sent by e-mail! We require any would-be adopters to bring written permission from their landlord or proof of home ownership. Our minimum adoption donation for dogs and puppies is $175.00 and cats and kittens $140.00. All adult animals have been altered and vaccinated for rabies and distemper prior to placement. They are also checked and treated for fleas, ticks, worms and ear mites. Additionally, cats have been feline leukemia and FIV tested and dogs are heartworm tested and started on Heartguard.
If you are looking for a specific pet, please let us know! We network with many different shelters and rescue groups and know of lots of pets that need help all the time! We can add you to our list of people looking for animals and we will make every effort to help you find your perfect companion.
The Valley Shore Animal Welfare League no longer uses language that accepts the current concept of animals as property, commodities and/or things. Rather than refer to ourselves and others as “owners” of animals, we now refer to ourselves and others as “guardians” of our animal companions and to animals as “he” or “she” rather than “it”.
Guardians do not buy or sell animals; instead they rescue and adopt. We urge you to do the same. Please help spread the word by adding these words to your email signature.
We are located at 647 Horse Hill Rd. In Westbrook, CT. Our Shelter Hours are 11 - 5 Tues-Sat.
