Protectors of Animals
Who We Are
Protectors of Animals was formed in 1975. It is operated entirely by dedicated volunteers. Our dogs are rescued directly from area pounds. Our cats are stray or abandoned and may come to us from animal control officers, police officers or even real estate agents. We have a shelter for cats and our dogs are kenneled at a private facility. All of our animals are checked by veterinarians upon their arrival to our shelter and kennel. Our volunteers work to socialize and evaluate our animals prior to making them available for adoption. Our dogs’ temperaments and training needs are assessed and we work with the goal of making them happy, healthy, responsive and trusting of people again. Our dogs receive immunizations for rabies, parvo, distemper and bordetella and are checked for heartworm upon arrival. If they are over 6 months of age, they are also spayed or neutered before they may be adopted. Our cats are checked for Feline Leukemia, they receive rabies and distemper shots and, if necessary, are treated for worms, ear mites and fleas.
Adopting a Friend
We want only the best for our dogs and cats and we seek to find the most suitable homes for our friends. Many of them have gone through terrible times and we want to ensure that their futures are bright and happy. We therefore have a screening and application process. As a matter of policy we do not place our dogs in households with children under the age of 6 or where small children (i.e. grandchildren) are frequent visitors. We do this both for the protection of the child and the dog's welfare. Due to the fact that we need to be able to check on our dogs, we will only consider residents of Connecticut as potential adoptors.
It costs us between $150 and $200 per cat/dog on average to make them well and prepare them for adoption. We count on donations to help us continue our work.

Volunteering and Donations
We are always looking for dedicated volunteers who are experienced in handling dogs and cats. Protectors of Animals relies solely on adoption donations, membership dues, gifts, memorials, bequests, grants and fund-raising events.
We are a non-profit tax exempt organization under 501c(3).
