"Rescuing one small dog at a time"

MISSION STATEMENT
We don't have any facility besides a little already pet filled apartment, so we literally take just "1 small dog at a time". We're an all breed rescue; breed or breed mix doesn't matter. Size does because my own dogs are little, so we need to keep it under 10 lbs. We take small dogs who aren't likely to be adopted from the shelter or have already been there and been overlooked. Typical reasons are that they're older (10 to 15 yrs. is common), "fear biters" (dogs who have snapped out of fear in the kennel and been labelled dangerous), have health issues (cataracts, skin issues, non critical things), or are filthy and matted to where no one can see past it. Dogs in the Los Angeles City shelter system (laanimalservices.com) have 4 business days from when they come in to when it becomes legal to euthanize them. Our model is to get the dog out, and give it more time and exposure to be adopted. Once we get the dog out of the shelter, we neuter, vet it, and provide it with a loving home environment (usually mine) till we can find it a good home, one where it will be provided for and adored. Prospective owners must go through an application process which includes an in person interview with all family members, and a "playdate" to see if the prospective adoptee and any existing pets get along. We do sometimes take small dogs that for one reason or other family can't keep, but we prefer that the family care for the dog themselves while we and they work on finding it a new home. We can't take large or medium breed dogs under any circumstances, because we truly are operating out of an apartment rather than a kennel. We can however help with internet exposure. We operate out of pocket (we're too small to benefit from non-profit status). We do charge an adoption fee, but it rarely covers pound bail, care and vet costs. The adoption fee is put towards the costs of saving the next little dog. We are associated, through an application process, with both Petfinder and the California Shelter Impound Group and are members of the ASPCA. |
