Here is what is coming up at the Laguna Beach Animal Shelter:
VOLUNTEER TRAINING -- For our volunteer training classes. Please call the Laguna Beach Animal Shelter to sign-up for the class. Our phone number is (949) 497-3552.
The City of Laguna Beach Animal Shelter was created in 1975, by a group of dedicated volunteers - The Pet Responsibility Committee - who lobbied the City Council to purchase the former S.P.C.A. building on Laguna Canyon Road. The Shelter serves the residents of Laguna Beach and Laguna Woods by providing temporary care for lost, stray and sick or injured animals rescued by Animal Services Officers within the city limits. At any one time the facility houses dogs, cats, and kittens, and a smaller number of other animals, such as birds, rabbits, chickens, ferrets, reptiles and guinea pigs. Every animal that comes through the Shelter is held for seven days for reclaiming by its owner. Because we are a small community the claim-rate is extremely high (80%).
Dogs and cats which remain unclaimed are seen by a veterinarian, bathed and groomed, vaccinated, wormed, micro-chipped, and neutered/spayed, in addition to receiving any other needed medical treatment. For this reason, the animals put up for adoption are healthy and have no serious behavior problems. The aim of our adoption policy is to place our animals in the most compatible situations possible. To ensure the most appropriate match, the adoption procedure requires an application and waiting period. The Adoption Committee then meets to review applications and decide on the most suitable placement, which results in the greatest chance of a permanent, rewarding and peaceful existence between animal and owner. This policy has kept our return rate at 5-10%, while the national average at other shelters is closer to 50%. No animals will be shipped out of Southern California we only adopt locally.

The dogs may be visited in the yard only after they have been examined by the veterinarian. All large breed dogs require a secure fenced yard. We encourage all household members to meet the prospective pet.
The Animal Shelter is staffed by one part-time and three full-time employees, three animal services officers, and a group of devoted volunteers. In addition to the main responsibility of running the Shelter, the paid staff offer free information on a variety of pet related matters, including low-cost neuter/spay, behavior modification, and dog licensing. Any animal lover looking for a rewarding community experience might well consider signing up to become a volunteer. Volunteers work a minimum of four hours per week, bathing, walking and socializing the animals; they also assist in adoptions and maintain a list of lost and found pets, as well as over-seeing the front desk and greeting the public. Both volunteers and staff have adopted "hard to place" dogs and cats.
We are always looking for foster homes for animals stranded by the many emergencies we experience because of our location in Laguna Canyon (flooding, fires, etc.). Fostering is also needed for animals requiring special attention because they are too young or too fragile to be left alone for long periods of time. While the Shelter's basic upkeep and routine operations is funded by the City of Laguna Beach, we are dependent on private donations for expensive surgical procedures, medications, and a small number of dogs rescued from other facilities. Donations also help to fund the educational programs developed by Shelter staff to encourage informed and responsible pet ownership.
