Metro Animal Shelter now microchips all dogs and cats that are over 4 months of age when they get adopted. We have joined Home Again and many other shelters to help companion animals reunite with their owners.

In October of 2006, Metro Animal Shelter started preforming pediatric surgeries. Dr. Gladney and Dr. Drain preform the surgeries on all shelter puppies and kittens that are at least 8 weeks of age. In association with Dr. Hales (who preforms the surgeries on all adult shelter animals since January of 2000) this is to reduce the numbers of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens.
Our shelter has now started using a SAFER test that helps us identify dogs that will make wonderful pets, dogs that need a small amount of behavior modification, and dogs that will not make appropriate pets. Ultimately, this means better placements, safer in-shelter interactions, and fewer returns. This test, however, is not a guarantee of the dog's behavior once it leaves the shelter and is placed in a home environment. Any dog is unpredictable in a home setting. Our profile of each animal is a guideline ONLY to help us match the appropriate pet with a potential adopter.

Volunteer Opportunities

We are in need of dependable volunteers at the shelter. Volunteer opportunities range from bathing, socializing, and evaluating animals to assisting with adoptions at our adoption center in Pet Supplies "Plus". For more information contact Linda Workman at 752-9101.

Who We Are

Opened in July of 1994, Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter has taken in thousands of homeless and unwanted animals in Tuscaloosa County and beyond. We are funded by the City of Tuscaloosa, City of Northport and the Tuscaloosa County Commission. We have 108 dog kennels, 72 cat cages, and 15 isolation cages. We take in over 7,000 a year and adopt out over 1200 a year. Once a week we do spay & neuter surgery on our shelter animals only , so that we may help control the pet overpopulation.

Adopting a Friend

We require a $55.00 adoption fee on all puppies and kittens under 3 months of age and a $75.00 adoption fee on all animals that are already spayed and/or neutered. A $100.00 deposit will be required on all unaltered puppies & kittens which will be refunded when proof of surgery is presented. All animals over 4 months of age will be fixed before being adopted.
