Who We Are

AFAR (Alabama Friends of Animals Rescue) is a no-kill organization dedicated to providing love, comfort, and shelter to virtually all animals in need. We are currently applying for our 501(c)3 designation from the IRS. We do accept donations, and every cent goes towards helping each animal that comes in.

We are situated on 2½ acres of quiet country road, outside of Hokes Bluff, AL. We accept all owner turn-ins from the Hokes Bluff/Ball Play areas, with proof of residency. Outside area turn-ins can be accepted depending on available space, but only from the surrounding communities, so please call for more information.

We find these babies everywhere: they come from the streets, other shelters, puppy mills, and sometimes from other rescues. Some are healthy, some are not; some are friendly, some are vicious; and some are simply terrified to even be alive. We love and help them all, regardless of type. Our goal and motto is very simple:

"We can't save every animal in the world, but we can give the world to every animal we save!!"

What We Do

Every single animal that comes into our rescue is currently being housed in private homes. There, they receive the love and socialization they need to become the perfect pet. All of our adoptees are fully vetted (including altering) prior to being offered for adoption. Currently, we are working on building a centralized shelter for your convenience. This process takes from a couple of weeks to a few months for EACH animal. Usually, the median time is 3-4 weeks, but we have some animals that have been with us much, much longer. Only after we are satisfied with their progress do we offer them for adoption.

AFAR also is able to provide housing for animals from our area during natural or manmade disasters. If you are in need of these services, please contact us at ndars1@yahoo.com.

Our Adoption Process

We require each prospective adopter to complete an application. We require veterinary references, personal references, at least one home visit prior to placement, and 2-3 home visits after placement. We do this to ensure that every single animal we place gets what they need and deserve; a loving, nurturing environment to thrive and feel good in. We want our adoptions to "stick", meaning that the ones who find forever homes stay there until the day they cross the "Rainbow Bridge" (pet heaven). We also require a signed Adoption Contract, which guarantees, among other things, that if for ANY REASON the adoption doesn't work out, the animal comes back to our rescue ONLY, not ending up in another shelter.

Homes are chosen based on the adoptee, not on who has the most money. We want every one of our adoptions to be "furever", so we match the animal to the right circumstances, ensuring that a relationship will be created that will be permanent. We do charge an adoption fee to recoup the cost of vet services.

Our adoption fees are non-refundable, and vary per animal, depending on the amount of vet care they needed. Every single dollar that comes in goes straight towards the next animal that arrives, helpless, scared, and needing us to show that life is good. Yes, you can get a companion cheaper. . .but you will never get one better!!
